The Puglisi family began building musical instruments in Catania (Siciiy) from 1820.
Giuseppe Reale, born in 1852, was a son of a piano and organ builder. In 1880 he founded one of the most important Italian factories for the production of musical instruments. After 1906 the company name became G. Puglisi Reale and Figli (G. Puglisi and Sons). Concetta and Michelangelo were The sons. Both Michelangelo Puglisi and his son Salvatore had an active role since 1909. They were tireless creators of violins, violas, strings, guitars, mandolins and cellos. After Salvatore's death around 1920, his son-in-law Buccheri assumed the leadership of the factory but various legal reasons caused the escape of many workers who founded their own company. That gave life to a great amount of luthiers in Catania and a wave of migration to France which so rising the French violin making school.
The factory was finally destroyed during the Second World War by the bombings of 1943.
Although attempts were made to resume production, many members of the original Puglisi family migrated to the USA, Canada and Australia.
